The presentation of the educational offering at the heart of the digital university

Who are they?

The University of Nantes has provided education at the highest level for over 50 years. Knowledge circulates within its campuses. The university is multidisciplinary to its core.

Each year, the university welcomes about 38,000 students between its 20 faculties, institutes and schools and its 44 research laboratories.

Stated needs

The presentation of its catalogue of educational programmes is a major challenge at the core of the digital strategy of the University of Nantes. This is why the university wishes to have at its disposal an innovative digital tool for presenting its educational programmes, meeting several strategical challenges; the promotion of its brand image, the visibility of its offering and lead conversion.

Furthermore, following the implementation of progressive specialisation, the key measure of the Law of 22 July 2013, the university wished to offer students a digital system allowing them to build their individual educational programmes and to facilitate the understanding of possible gateways within educational programmes.

The project

Based on the K-Sup solution which is used by more than 50 higher education schools and universities throughout Europe, in collaboration with the University of Nantes, the Institut Catholique de Paris and the Université Catholique de Lyon, Kosmos has designed an innovative solution for the presentation of educational offerings which facilitates browsing for students and future students.

- A first area is dedicated to the key information about the programme: differentiating elements, the programme outline, specific partnerships with specific external structures.
- Each section of the file is presented as a summary. Option buttons allow the different topics of each programme to be displayed in more depth: presentation of the programme, admissions, programme details, continuing studies or career targeted, registration, etc.
- A fixed menu allows the user to browse rapidly from one topic to another.

A search engine, based on elastic search technology, allows search results to be filtered according to predefined criteria: level of diploma, career targeted, location of courses, discipline, etc.

A real communications and marketing tool, the educational offering naturally integrates “call-to-action” type buttons which encourage students or future students to perform an action on the site: downloading brochures, contacting the school or university or registering on-line. A functionality allows the CRM of the school to synchronise with K-Sup, thus facilitating the administrative management of these requests.

To respond to the changes in the national educational framework which makes provision for the progressive specialisation of the student, a new functionality for building their career path has been developed by Kosmos. By means of this tool, each student or future student can simulate their choice of career path, semester-by-semester, so as to build their individual educational programme.

Several ideas for evolution have already been identified, in particular for the educational programme functionality. Eventually, the student will be able to build their programme “backwards”, starting from a targeted profession and identifying the different possible paths which will allow them to reach it. He or she will also be able to construct their inter-disciplinary programme, for example at the level of second year University up to the Master’s level.

The challenge and the opportunities of this work is to provide a real tool for helping the student to orient themselves.
